Svenska Skolan i Shanghai (Swedish School in Shanghai) was founded in 2001 and we offer education in the Swedish language for students aged 6 to 18 years (following the Swedish school system Grade 1 to High School).
Today the Swedish School offers education after regular school hours once a week, at several locations in Shanghai.
Since there is no Swedish School in Shanghai and most students are attending International schools, the objective is to maintain and develop the Swedish language for students with Swedish as a mother tongue. The organisation does not offer private Swedish lessons.
The Swedish School has today around 70 students and has been growing with approximately 30% on a yearly basis.
The Swedish School is a non-profit organization and it is financed by a yearly school fee paid by the parents as well as by government subsidies. Parents pay for textbooks and other teaching material. Board members of the school together with parents are arranging different kind of cultural activities outside the classrooms. The engagement from teachers, board members and parents is big, which is a prerequisite to be able to continue with the important work with the Swedish students. But as in most volunteer based organisation, a financial stability is a critical part for its contingency.
